The Heart Sutra
Wisdom comes through suffering or the understanding of suffering, which the artist felt during the extraction of four wisdom teeth in Pandí, a nearby town from ArteSumapaz, in August 2023.
The physical pain prompted the artist to chant The Heart Sutra, the title Prajñāpāramitāhrdaya in Sanskrit, translated as "The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom." This classic Buddhist text says if one can clear one's perception, one can see things for what they really are.
Thus, The Heart Sutra project was inspired.
The text was first written on a piece of rice paper, backlit and reversed, and copied on the linoleum board. Carving evolved a different mark in its entirety despite the handwriting reference. Later, some shapes were cut to create stamps to print in a second color. The surroundings of ArteSumapaz inspired those shapes, marking the artist’s fond memory of the art residency.
The process is a meditation on the teaching of the sutra as well as healing from the wounds.
